(Kevin Clark / The Herald) Hops and Sips Drink This: Scuttlebutt brewery celebrates 25 years in Everett A 25th. The tartness from my original notes seems to be gone and the body is much meatier, suggesting that I may have had an overaged bottle. Phil Bannan and his wife, Cynthia, started Scuttlebutt in Everett in 1996. Its better than I remember, although nothing stellar. Update Since my review is now two years old I thought Id re-taste it using an ∠5 vintage. Mouthfeel The tartness of this one took away from the overall experience, but either way this was a nice, sipper.ĭrinkability This was a good barley wine at one point, but I thought it was a little past its prime. ![]() The malt and sherry flavors were quite pleasant, though. An unappealing sourness came out that felt spent and broken down. Taste I thought this one fell apart a little bit at the taste. The big alcohol of this 9.9 ABV (I had the 2001 vintage which is stronger than the 1999 that was used to add the beer to the site) makes itself known as well. Theres also some malt in there (not a hop to speak of) but its mostly the sweet sherry and burnt oak aroma that dominates. I mean, if you found some dried oak that had been used to age sherry then set it on fire and whiffed the smoke, this is exactly how it would smell. Smell This ale just wreaks of old, burnt oak casks used to age sherry. A beer lover decided he didn't want to run out of beer anymore and started a. as well as steaks, prime rib, chicken and salmon dinners from 4pm to close. ![]() 12 ounce bottle once again acquired as an extra in a trade with SuzyGreenberg, thanks for the opportunity Ben, drinking right now as the nightcap, poured into an oversized wine glass, color is a dark orangish brown, one inch bubbly off white head that did not last long at all, not much retention or lacing, smell consisted of caramel, grassy accents, dark fruit, light hops, booze, sweetness, and toffee, flavor was full of malt from the very beginning, not much different in the middle, it was the sweet kind too instead of the chewy stuff, needed more hops and bitterness in the finish, did not change much as it warmed, the toffee taste seemed stale and a bit pungent at times, not balanced, mouthfeel is sweet, tangy, slightly chewy, and boozy, medium body, needs more carbonation though, taste lasts a long time, could not finish the bottle and came up prett short, heavy stuff and too reliant on malt, needs some balance to get down easier, also a fair amount of alcohol is out in the open, also my first beer from this brewery, always up for trying new barleywines, while this was not the best interpretation of the style I have had, I am glad I tried it, worth trying Mar 14, 2009Īppearance Extremely thick and cloudy dark brown body with a decent head. Specialties: We are a casual and fun family pub/restaurant that specializes in hand crafted ales, beer battered fish n chips, homemade clam chowder/soups, fish tacos, great burgers & sandwiches- all at great prices. ![]()
